Why should I renew my ISC2 certification?
ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits to retain their certifications in good standing. For each certification, the CPE requirement differs.
What is CPE?
CPE is the abbreviation for Continuing Professional Education. ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE credits to keep their certification in good standing. Typically, 1 CPE credit is gained by 1 hour of professional activity, attending an event, or an online course.
When should I start submitting ISC2 CPE credits to renew my ISC2 certification?
Earning CPE hours requires a significant amount of time. ISC2 expects you to earn the required CPE hours over the given three-year period. If you leave to the end, you may have problems in submitting CPE credits and that might risk your certification status.
What are the ISC2 CPE categories?
ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE credits in certain fields and categories. These are Education, Contribution to the profession, Professional development, and Unique work experience.
Education (Group A or B): You can earn CPE credits for consuming content in self-directed learning activities.
Contributions to the profession: You can earn CPE credits for creating new content (writing books, articles, presentations, etc.) for the topic related to your area of expertise.
Unique Work Experience: Members and Associates can earn up to 10 CPE credits for the activities performed during their regular working hours.
Professional Development: Members can earn CPE credits for activities enhancing professional skills (management, communication, team building, etc.)
What are the ISC2 CPE Requirements?
ISC2 requires certification holders to earn certain numbers of CPE credits every three years to renew their certification.
- CISSP Certification holders must earn 120 CPE credits.
- CC Certification holders must earn 45 CPE credits.
- CCSP and CSSLP certification holders must earn 90 CPE credits.
- CGRC, HCISPP, and SSCP certification holders must earn 60 CPE credits.
- CISSP-ISSAP, ISSEP and ISSMP certification holders must earn 20 CPE credits.
If you hold more than one certification, you must earn 20 CPE credits for each certification.
There are Group A and Group B categories in all CPE credits.
- Group A activities are domain-related activities, such as attending an information security course, business program, etc.
- Group B activities are non-domain related activities, such as volunteering, attending a seminar about communication, etc.
There is no limit for Group A activities. ISC2 certification holders can earn all required CPE credits from Group A activities.
However, there is a cap for Group B activities. ISC2 certification holders can submit a maximum of 30 CPE credits for Group B activities during their three-year cycle.
There is a cap for each CPE entry. You cannot submit more than 40 CPE credits per activity entry.
While there is no annual CPE submission requirement, ISC2 suggests reporting one-third of the required CPE credits every year and completing credit submissions in a three-year period.
Earned CPE credits are reported through the CPE portal and may be audited by ISC2.
What are the ways to earn ISC2 CPE Hours?
There are four main categories to earn CPE credits: Education, Contribution to the profession, Professional development, and Unique work experience.
How can I submit my earned ISC2 CPE credits?
You should have a profile on the ISC2 website isc2.org. You can log on to your profile, navigate to the CPE portal, and submit your earned CPE credits.
Upon submitting your CPE credits, ISC2 will review your submission. After review, CPE credits are approved and shown on your profile.
What should I do after I complete ISC2 CPE Hours?
After you complete ISC2 CPE credits in your cycle, you must apply for ISC2 certification renewal on your ISC2 profile page.
How much does the ISC2 certification renewal cost?
In order to maintain certification and Associate status, certified members and Associates must earn CPE credits as well as pay an annual maintenance fee (AMF). Both requirements ensure you remain in good standing.
Single- or multiple-certified members holding the CISSP, CCSP, SSCP, CGRC, and/or CSSLP are required to pay a 125 USD annual management fee, due on the first-anniversary date of the cycle and the same date each year thereafter.
CC-certified members and Associates are required to pay a 50 USD annual management fee, due on the first-anniversary date of the cycle and the same date each year thereafter.
At the end of the three-year certification cycle, when the CPE credit and AMF payment requirements are met, certified members will be recertified to a new three-year cycle.
At the end of the one-year Associate cycle, when both CPE credits and AMF payment requirements are met, the Associate designation will be renewed to a new one-year cycle.

There are free courses or free events (webinars, conferences, etc.) that you can attend and gain ISC2 CPE credits. However, completing all ISC2 CPE credits for free will be tough, especially if you are a working professional.
