Why should I renew my CISSP certification?

ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits to retain their certifications in good standing. For CISSP certification, the requirement is earning 120 CPE credits every three years. To retain your CISSP certification in good standing, you must earn 120 CPE credits every three years, submit to ISC2, and renew your CISSP certification.

What is CPE?

CPE is the abbreviation for Continuing Professional Education. ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE credits to keep their certification in good standing. Typically, 1 CPE credit is gained by 1 hour of professional activity, attending an event, or an online course.

When should I start submitting CISSP CPE credits to renew my CISSP certification?

Earning CPE hours requires a significant amount of time. ISC2 expects you to earn the required CPE hours over the given three-year period. If you leave to the end, you may have problems in submitting CPE credits and that might risk your certification status.

What are the CISSP CPE categories?

ISC2 requires certification holders to earn CPE credits in certain fields and categories. These are Education, Contribution to the profession, Professional development, and Unique work experience.

  • Education (Group A or B): You can earn CPE credits for consuming content in self-directed learning activities.
  • Contributions to the profession: You can earn CPE credits for creating new content (writing books, articles, presentations, etc.) for the topic related to your area of expertise.
  • Unique Work Experience: Members and Associates can earn up to 10 CPE credits for the activities performed during their regular working hours.
  • Professional Development: Members can earn CPE credits for activities enhancing professional skills (management, communication, team building, etc.)

What are the CISSP CPE Requirements?

CISSP CPE requirement for certification holders is to collect 120 CPE credits every three years. There are further requirements for these credits as well.

There are Group A and Group B categories in all CPE credits.

  • Group A activities are domain-related activities, such as attending an information security course, business program, etc.
  • Group B activities are non-domain related activities, such as volunteering, attending a seminar about communication, etc.

There is no limit for Group A activities. CISSP certification holders can earn all required 120 CPE credits from Group A activities.

However, there is a cap for Group B activities. CISSP certification holders can submit a maximum of 30 CPE credits for Group B activities during their three-year cycle.

There is a cap for each CPE entry. You cannot submit more than 40 CPE credits per activity entry.

While there is no annual CPE submission requirement, ISC2 suggests reporting 40 CPE credits every year and completing 120 CPE credits submission in a three-year period.

Earned CPE credits are reported through the CPE portal and may be audited by ISC2.

What are the ways to earn CISSP CPE Hours?

There are four main categories to earn CPE credits: Education, Contribution to the profession, Professional development, and Unique work experience.

How can I submit my earned CISSP CPE credits?

You should have a profile on the ISC2 website isc2.org. You can log on to your profile, navigate to the CPE portal, and submit your earned CPE credits.

Upon submitting your CPE credits, ISC2 will review your submission. After review, CPE credits are approved and shown on your profile.

What should I do after I complete 120 CISSP CPE Hours?

After you complete 120 CISSP CPE credits in your cycle, you must apply for CISSP renewal on your ISC2 profile page.

You’ll then be directed to a secure payment page to pay your CISSP renewal fee to ISC2.

How much does the CISSP certification renewal cost?

CISSP certification holders are required to pay a 125 USD annual management fee (AMF), due on the first-anniversary date of the cycle and the same date each year thereafter.

At the end of the three-year certification cycle, when the 120 CISSP CPE credits and AMF payment requirements are met, certified members will be recertified to a new three-year cycle.

You will not need to pay an additional fee for CISSP certification renewal other than the AMF.
